(b. 1967, Netherlands. Lives and works in Los Angeles.)
Nouwens studied at California Institute of the Arts, Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, and the Willem de Kooning Academy. In her photographic practice, she creates fragmented visual essays set, principally, on the streets of Los Angeles. Rooted in community activism and nourished by a strong engagement with alternative social systems, Nouwens’ work offers a political aesthetic defining photography’s documentary tradition anew. Her work has been exhibited internationally in major institutions including the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Wende Museum (upcoming), both in Los Angeles; the Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam (Foam); and the Netherlands Photomuseum, Rotterdam (upcoming.)
